Give us a little background about yourself. I was born and raised in Kentucky where I became a UK Wildcat fan. I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a Nuclear Submarine Officer for five years before getting out and entering the business world. My company helps small business owners with their technology needs. I also own an ecommerce business. My wife Kelly and I met when I was in the Navy. We have 3 children: Legare is my 18 year old daughter who is at the Naval Academy in her first year; Henry is a sophomore at Hammond and fellow CCF member; and Oscar is a 6th grader at Hammond but has not gotten in to Crossfit yet.
How did you hear about CCF? I started a Paleo diet in July of 2014 and lost about 20 pounds very quickly. In reading about Paleo online and in magazines I kept hearing about CrossFit and “lifting heavy things”. So I looked up CCF online and stopped in one afternoon. Reilly was there, eating beef, a sweet potato and sugar free ketchup but talked with me for about 30 minutes. I told him I did not want to get hurt and he promised me that I wouldn’t. So I decided to give it a try. That was the end of October. He put me in touch with Melissa and the rest of the gang.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
Most people are shocked when they find out I was a nuclear officer on a submarine. I guess I don’t look that geeky!
What music can we find currently playing in your car?
Whatever my son Henry lets me listen to! He likes Rap and Country.
What current things are you working toward when it comes to your health, training, career or personal life?
I have been amazed at the strength I have gained at CrossFit but also mobility. I was joking with Paul the other day about my first night. He told me to do a squat and I think I might have lowered down about 3″. He laughed! So my mobility gets better every day.
Tell us about your most memorable workout from CCF – This is my first Open so Workout 15.1 will stand out. Not because I crushed it but I will remember how everyone was cheering me on. Josh and I were the only ones doing it on a Friday afternoon. Bradley judged me a really helped. Reilly and Andy were both there helping me through it. It felt like family!
Greatest accomplishment – I could not do one pullup on November first and just recently did 40 in a WOD. That’s crazy.
What would you tell someone who is interested in Training with CCF? I had no idea the impact that CrossFit would have on me. I would encourage them to give it a try for 3 reasons. First is the group workout atmosphere. I have done P90X and Insanity in the comfort of my home for the past couple of years. And had some success. But it is nothing compared to CrossFit. I didn’t think I was the type of person that would like working out with other people. But I could not have been more wrong. I look forward to seeing the Noon Crew every day. Seeing others working hard is very motivating and makes me want to work harder. Second is the variety. You walk in to every workout not knowing what you are going to do. I like that. It is never boring and every workout pushing you to the limit. Third and probably most important is the staff. Melissa, Reilly, Josh, Andy, Paul and Jonathan have all taken me under their wing and helped me grow. I love those guys!! They always have a smile on their face and they care about me.
